About Vanessa
Vanessa belongs outdoors and dresses accordingly, even in the middle of Mayfair. She is 173 cm and slim, her sandy brown hair long, with balayage lightening the lengths, her eyes hazel. Her clothes are black in the evening and florals by day, and she has the loose, unhurried posture of someone who would rather be standing in a garden than a lobby. She is twenty-five. She is slim and moves slowly, and she has never been seen to hurry across a lobby.
Her English is quiet, with long pauses in it that are thinking rather than hesitation. She is gentle company and quietly stubborn: she will not be talked into a plan she does not like, and she says so without any fuss. She grows things, swims in cold water in the summer and takes photographs of walls, which she cannot explain and has stopped trying to. She is comfortable with a guest who wants to say very little for the first hour.
Her Mount Street evening is upstairs at The Audley, above the tiled pub on the corner, where the dining room is small, the pictures are peculiar and the windows look down the street. It suits her: handsome, slightly odd, entirely unbothered by anybody's reputation. She lives in Paddington, fifteen minutes away, and the Mount Street gardens behind the church are her favourite corner of the district for a quarter of an hour before dinner. She will take the window table and spend half the evening looking out of it.
Long evenings suit her considerably better than short ones. She goes to hotels and private addresses along Mount Street and the streets towards the park. A single note naming your day is all it takes.

Booking her evening
Vanessa is at her best over three hours or more and likes a quarter of an hour in the gardens before dinner. The upstairs room is worth a day's notice.
Her figures are the house figures, printed in full on the rates page, and the whole arrangement runs in one thread from the first line to the confirmation.

An evening with Vanessa
Vanessa's evening opens in the small gardens behind the church on Mount Street, which almost nobody uses and which she treats as her own. Fifteen minutes on a bench, and a conversation that starts without having to compete with a room. Nothing about the rest of the evening has to be settled while you are sitting there.
Dinner upstairs is small and slightly strange in the best way: an odd picture on every wall, tables far enough apart, and a window over the street. She is gentle company, slow to fill a silence and very good at the sort of evening that is not trying to be an occasion. Afterwards she will walk towards the park if the night is mild. At the hotel she is warm, unhurried and entirely undramatic about the hour.
Vanessa, in her own words
Brick, plaster, paint that has given up. I have hundreds and I can defend none of them.
Long. I am slow to start and I would rather not spend the whole booking starting.
The gardens behind the church. Two minutes from everything and empty every time. Nobody thinks to go through the gate, so the benches are always free. It is the one corner of Mayfair where you can hear the traffic stop.

In the margin
The remarks card for Vanessa is still blank, which is usually what discretion looks like. A note appears here only when a guest writes one, she agrees to it, and the house has checked that it reads as a first name, a month and nothing private.
