Laura looks like the outdoors, even in a dining room. She is 169 cm and athletic, her hair long and sun-kissed light brown, the summer still in it, her eyes green. She dresses simply and expensively, and she has the particular ease of a woman who is not thinking about how she looks, which is of course the reason it works so well. Her clothes are plain and her shoes are chosen for pavements, and she looks better for both decisions.

She is twenty-five. English, spoken warmly and without decoration. She runs in the mornings, swims when there is water worth swimming in, and is frank about preferring daylight to late nights, although she is perfectly capable of late nights. She asks direct questions, takes the answers seriously and laughs easily, at a volume that suits the room she is in. She is honest about what she does not know and curious enough to ask about it twice. She is restful company at the end of a hard week.

For an evening in St James's she likes Quaglino's on Bury Street, down the stairs into the big room, where there is usually music later and the space absorbs a long dinner without making a ceremony of it. She lives in Paddington and crosses in a quarter of an hour. If the weather is reasonable she will suggest walking part of the way back, through the park and out at the top, rather than taking the taxi that was waiting. She will take the outside table in October and be entirely unbothered by the cold.
