About Karolina
Karolina is tall and still. She is 174 cm and slim, with long black hair worn straight, brown eyes, and the trained posture of someone who danced for years and never entirely stopped. Black is her colour. She wears very little jewellery and no scent you would notice from across a room, which is a decision rather than an oversight. She is not cold. She is simply unhurried, and she has never seen the point of filling a room with noise. Her shoes are always flat enough to walk home in.
She is twenty-seven. English is her only language and she is economical with it: short sentences, accurate ones, and a pause before anything that matters. Guests who enjoy talking find her an excellent audience. Guests who do not find that she is comfortable saying nothing for a while, and that the evening is not damaged by it. She dislikes being photographed and likes being looked at, and she is aware that this is a contradiction.
In St James's she asks for Wiltons on Jermyn Street, which has been serving oysters and grilled fish to quiet tables since long before anyone now in the room. The panelled space is small, the service is old fashioned and says nothing it does not need to, and dinner there ends in exactly the right frame of mind for a slow walk up to Piccadilly. She lives in Covent Garden and is ten minutes away by taxi. She will order oysters without asking whether you want any, and she will be right.
She is at her best over a long evening rather than a short one. St James's and the streets north of it are where she is asked for. A single message naming the date will hold her.

Booking her evening
Jermyn Street tables are small and go early, so a day's notice is sensible. Karolina is otherwise available for hotel evenings in St James's at shorter notice.
Her figures are the house figures, printed in full on the rates page, and the whole arrangement runs in one thread from the first line to the confirmation.

An evening with Karolina
Karolina's evening has very little in it, which is the design. A drink at your hotel, taken slowly. A short taxi. A table that was reserved days ago and will not be hurried by anyone.
She eats lightly, oysters and something grilled, and she lets the room do the work: dark panelling, low voices, a waiter who has done this for thirty years and will not interrupt a sentence. Between courses she asks one good question and then leaves you the space to answer it properly. Afterwards she walks, if you would like to walk. St James's at eleven is close to empty, the club windows are lit and nobody is looking at anyone, which she considers the best of London.
Karolina, in her own words
It is. I talk when I have something to say. The rest of the time I am listening, which is not the same as being absent.
Only alone, and badly on purpose. The posture stayed, the discipline mostly left.
Because nothing there has changed for the sake of changing, and the staff have perfected the art of not noticing anyone. Discretion in a room like that is a habit rather than a favour, and you can see it in how little anybody looks up.
Where she sits
In the margin
The remarks card for Karolina is still blank, which is usually what discretion looks like. A note appears here only when a guest writes one, she agrees to it, and the house has checked that it reads as a first name, a month and nothing private.
