About Margo
Margo is thirty-one and has no interest in pretending otherwise. She is 166 cm and slim, her dark brown hair long and straight, her eyes brown, and she dresses with a precision that borders on severe: black, well cut, heels chosen for the floor she will be standing on. It is a grown woman's wardrobe and it reads as such from the far end of a lounge. She wears a watch, an old one, and glances at it only between courses.
Her English is exact. She is not cold, but she is not effusive either, and guests who have had enough of enthusiasm tend to find her a considerable relief. She reads history, follows the markets out of habit rather than need, and has a talent for the one dry remark that ends a subject properly. Anyone who has spent a whole day surrounded by agreement finds her restful.
She lives in Knightsbridge and keeps her dinners close to it. Mr Chow, on the Knightsbridge side, has been doing the same thing in the same room since long before the neighbourhood turned over, and she likes it for that: the service is formal, the trolley still comes round, and nobody at the next table is photographing the food. Afterwards it is a two minute taxi to any of the hotels along the park, or a walk if the evening is dry. She knows the staff by name and has never once mentioned that she does.
She takes evenings of three hours and longer. Dinners in Knightsbridge and along the park are her usual work. One note with the day in it brings her confirmation by return.

Booking her evening
Margo takes dinner bookings and longer evenings rather than short calls, and prefers a day's notice so the table is settled before you arrive.
Her figures are the house figures, printed in full on the rates page, and the whole arrangement runs in one thread from the first line to the confirmation.

An evening with Margo
Margo's evening begins with a drink she will nurse for the whole of the first half hour while she works out what kind of company you actually want. She is very quick at this and never says so.
Dinner in Knightsbridge is formal and old fashioned, which suits her. She orders confidently, defers on the wine and then quietly corrects the order of the courses so that the evening runs properly. Conversation is adult: history, money, the parts of your work you cannot discuss at home. She does not flatter and she does not compete. Afterwards she is content to return to the hotel and let the last hour be slow, and she leaves at the agreed time without a word about it.
Margo, in her own words
I prefer it. Thirty-one buys you the right to be uninterested in a great many things.
History, usually one century at a time. I like knowing how badly things have gone before.
Rarely. I am not at my best in an hour and I would rather not be seen at less than my best. Three hours is where I begin to be worth the trouble, and an evening that starts slowly is the only kind I have ever trusted.
Where she sits
In the margin
The remarks card for Margo is still blank, which is usually what discretion looks like. A note appears here only when a guest writes one, she agrees to it, and the house has checked that it reads as a first name, a month and nothing private.
